Bio
Born in Buenos Aires in 1981, Franco Fasoli (also known as Jaz) is one of the best known and most talented artists on the Argentinian scene.
A stage designer and muralist, the art of Fasoli, who began using the streets as a canvas at the end of the 1990s, is influenced by his lifelong study of ceramics and the Argentinian capital’s iconic fileteado technique.
Towards the end of the last decade, Franco turned his back on the traditional graffiti lettering and the subsequent representation of musical motifs associated with fileteado to introduce into his work the vivid contradictions of Latin American societies, their rituals and their seemingly perpetual instability.
One of the most striking aspects of his work is its exploration of materials and scale. From large-format paintings in public spaces through to smaller works on bronze and paper, his art feeds on the fluctuation of contexts and resources.
The tension between the dominant global culture and subcultures as spaces of resistance has also influenced him both at the conceptual level and in his actions throughout his career. Multiple forms of individual and collective identity form the sociological backbone of his work.
Represented through conflict, confrontation and discursive juxtaposition, Fasoli does not seek to answer the question but rather to constantly rework the statement, questioning the questioning and returning to question himself.

Franco Fasoli, nacido en Buenos Aires en 1981 y que también responde al nombre de Jaz, actualmente reside en Barcelona.
Escenógrafo y muralista, el arte de Fasoli está influenciado tanto por los estudios de cerámica realizados a lo largo de su trayectoria como por su trabajo en la calle como lienzo a finales de los 90.
Es a finales de la década pasada cuando Franco deja atrás el graffiti tradicional para introducir en su temática las vividas contradicciones de las sociedades latinoamericanas, sus rituales y su aparentemente perenne inestabilidad.
Así, una de las características principales de su trabajo es la exploración a nivel material y escala. Desde pinturas de gran formato en el espacio publico hasta pequeñas obras en bronce o papel, se puede observar que la oscilación de contextos y recursos son los nutrientes que alimentan su obra.
La tensión entre la cultura dominante global y las sub-culturas como espacio de resistencia, han sido también materia de estudio a nivel conceptual y en el propio accionar a lo largo de su carrera. Las múltiples formas de identidad tanto individual como colectiva son la columna vertebral de esta influencia sociológica del artista.
Representado a través del conflicto, el enfrentamiento y la yuxtaposición discursiva, Fasoli no pretende responder a la incógnita, sino más bien rediseñar el planteo constantemente, cuestionar al cuestionamiento y volverse a cuestionar a él mismo.
Artist Statement
My work consists of large-scale murals, as well as collages and paintings.
I like my murals to have a direct or indirect connection to the place where they are painted and I use popular symbols and rituals from the countries I visit to create a specific mythology, something that characterises my paintings. It’s a mythology in which the animal and human bodies melt into each other, becoming confused and giving rise to struggles that are also dances: wars and celebrations.
I am interested in so-called subcultures and counter-cultures when it comes to understanding and researching the site for a work. The relationship between the mainstream, or the dominant culture, and these other cultures is represented by what happens in the paintings, in the scenes and in the action of my work itself. In this respect, I am particularly interested in thinking about how subcultures are co-opted by the dominant culture and the market to create a new product for mass consumption. My projects reflect on the paradox of this phenomenon.
The concept of identity touches the majority of my work, both in murals and medium and small formats. My work explores how individual and collective identities are formed. It questions whether there is such a thing as a stable way of feeling part of a collective or if it is actually an entity that is continuously mutating and changing and thus in permanent conflict.

Mi trabajo consiste en la realización de murales de grandes dimensiones, además de collages y pinturas.
Me interesa que los murales tengan vinculación directa o indirecta con el lugar donde los realizo y hago uso de la simbología y los rituales populares de los países que voy visitando para crear una mitología propia característica de mis pinturas, donde el cuerpo animal y el humano se funden y confunden, y se generan luchas que son, a su vez, danzas: guerras y festejos.
Me interesan las denominadas sub-culturas o contra-culturas a la hora de entender e investigar un espacio de trabajo. La relación entre el mainstream o la cultura dominante y estas otras culturas se muestra tanto dentro de lo que acontece en las pinturas, en las escenas, como en mi accionar de trabajo. En este sentido me interesa mucho pensar de qué manera las subculturas son tomadas por la cultura dominante y el mercado para generar un nuevo producto de consumo masivo. La paradoja que surge de esta situación es algo sobre lo que reflexiono en mis proyectos.
El concepto de Identidad atraviesa gran parte de mi obra, tanto mural como de mediano y pequeño formato. Me pregunto cómo se conforma una identidad, la individual y la colectiva. Y si existe realmente algo así como un modo estable de sentirse parte de un colectivo o si es más bien algo que está en permanente mutación y cambio y por lo tanto, en permanente conflicto.
